Over the past 30 years, we have had the opportunity to move 11 times, some of our houses had a designated studio space that I claimed and sometimes I had a studio space outside the home. Since most of art furniture consists of easels but I knew I wanted to purchase a table to devote to drawing. With a small budget and a small space to fill, I chose a modestly priced glass topped drawing table. It seemed like it checked the most boxes at the time. Three moves and some years later, I consider that table one of my most used pieces.
My glass-topped drawing table is more than just a workspace—it’s the Swiss Army knife of my studio. Sleek and versatile, this table has become my go-to surface for almost every creative endeavor. Whether I’m sketching designs, cutting fabric for a sewing project, ironing intricate details, or even tracing patterns using the glass top as a light table, it delivers unparalleled flexibility. Its durability ensures it stands up to the demands of hot glue guns, watercolors, and everything in between, making it a cornerstone of my creative process.

The light that I use to illuminate the bottom of the table so that it becomes a Lightbox was purchased at Ikea. It has a flexible neck and clip using the entire surface of the table by simply moving the light.
Outfitting a studio doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Some of the best pieces in my creative space are secondhand finds or repurposed items that have been given new life. Thrift stores, estate sales, and even items tucked away in storage can become the perfect studio additions with a little imagination. A sturdy old desk can transform into a drawing table, vintage cabinets can organize supplies, and unexpected items—like an old drafting stool or repurposed shelving—can add both function and character. Creativity isn’t just for the artwork itself; it extends to how we build the spaces where we create.
What’s your favorite piece of studio equipment, and why? I’d love to hear what makes your creative space special!
